Today I want to show you a fascinating city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.
Located on a rocky peninsula 850 m long and 300 m wide, 37 km north of Burgas. Nessebar is divided into two parts: New Nesebar, where most of the modern houses and hotels are located, the resort complex Sunny Beach - and Old Nesebar, located on a small peninsula.
Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It succeeded the ancient Thracian settlement of Mesembria, which existed from the beginning of the first millennium BC, and in 510 BC it became a Greek colony.
From antiquity to the present day, remnants of the fortress walls, towers, gates, and reliefs have been preserved. In 1983, the area of the old town of Nessebar was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Intensive archaeological excavations are underway in the old part of the city. Excavations have revealed the ruins of a 9th-century church as well as the remains of Byzantine baths.
You can reach Nessebar from Burgas Airport by taxi — it’s only 36 km away — or fly to Sofia and then take a bus to Nessebar...
I came here mainly for the sea and the nearby water park, but I also enjoyed the stunning coastal landscapes during my walks.
